Who are we ?
Boy Scout Troop 118 is part of the Orange Mountains District, Northern NJ Council, Boy Scouts of America. We are chartered by Solomon Schecter Day School of Essex and Union. We are committed to imparting: self-reliance, leadership, outdoor skills and fun all in a Jewish setting. Boy Scouting is for boys who have earned the Arrow of Light Award in Cub Scouts (and are 10 1/2) or have completed the fifth grade, or who are 11 through 17 years old. For younger boys, see Cub Scouts below.
Jewish ObservanceThe troop observes the laws of kashrut (we only eat kosher food) and is Shabbat observant in all its activities. When participating in troop activities, we always cover our head.
Meetings
We meet several Sunday evenings a month at the Solomon Schechter Upper School in West Orange. Take a look at our calendar to see when our next meeting is.
Activities
In addition to troop campouts, we go hiking and indoor wall climbing. We go camping all year round. We march in the Salute to Israel parade and help out at our federation's Super Sunday fund raising. For the last several years, we were proud to help out at the Metrowest Jewish Federation's "Cultural Celebration of Israel", where the boys helped the vendors and worked at activities. What ever we do, we try to have lots of fun.
Summer Camp
In the summer of 2007, we attended Camp Big Springs, located at Resica Falls Scout Reservation, just North of Stroudsburg, PA. All the food is strictly kosher and we hold daily morning and Shabbat services. All of this is at a first-class Scout camp. Our Scouts returned, having earned lots of merit badges and having made lots of new friends. In the summer of 2008 we will return to Resica Falls. Check our calendar for when we will go to camp.
Eagle Scouts
The Troop is very proud of its three Eagle, the highest rank a Scout can achieve. Scouts Chaim T-V., Etan B. and David M. have each reached the rank of Eagle Scout. Eagle Scouts must complete a project for a non-Scout organization. Here are some pictures of these three Scout's projects.
Other Activities
We also attend the NJ Kinus weekend in the spring, where we join with lots of other Jewish Scouts from around the Northeast. We also attend the Greater NY Kinus. Every four years, the boys have the opportunity to attend the BSA National Jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia (the next National Jamboree is in 2010).
For boys who are in the first grade through fifth grade (or 7 through 10 years of age), Cub Scouting is a year-round family program that you can participate in with your son. For information on Cub Scout Packs, please contact Rabbi Lisa Vernon. Our Cub Scout Pack is sponsored by Solomon Schechter Day School of Essex and Union. Check out our Cub Scout Pack web site.
